Games legally considered as an art form in the US!

I was browsing www.escapistmagazine.com while i stumbled on this pretty impressive (well at least for me :P ) new:

Games Now Legally Considered an Art Form (in the USA)

The US National Endowment for the Arts now considers videogames eligible for artistic funding, legally recognizing them as an art form.

Full article here, check it out.

For me this is a very interesting change that will maybe end the endless debate about if games should be considered as art or not (a very interesting debate on the subject btw there was on Ebert's blog: part1, part2 ) and probably will open the way for more quality indie games throught state funding (ok I know I'm probably over-optimistic here :P )

What's your opinion on the subject? My next game review will be dedicated to this debate, I promise :)

  5. This is bad news for performing arts. Means money diverted away from classical music, and that's what I love.

  6. This is a valid concern Fortissimo, on the other hand, the world is changing and "moves forward" (credit to Stephen King :P ), and so are the traditonal deffinitions of things like art or sports. The example of sports is an interesting one, things we concider sports today aren't meet at all the classic deffinition.

Btw on my Review for Shadow Of The Colossus I'll post some tracks from its fantastic soundtrack, I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

  7. honestly I think most games are more like applied art, not fine art

  8. Games involve some artistic features, but they are more of a commercial nature...

  16. i guess games can be art, most "art" is shitty though.

  17. It's either art or crap I guess. But it is time that game creators got their due.

  18. Games are most definitely an art form. It's insane to say otherwise. And if any game can plead for the case of games being an art form, Shadow of the Colossus is it.

  19. I agree that SOME games are an art.

After I had finshed Fallout3 it felt wrong to say that I had 'played' it, instead it felt more like I had 'read' it, not becasue you do a lot of reading during the game but in the way the story was so finely crafted and unfolded like a great novel.

  21. Don't get me wrong, I like video games as much as anyone, but I don't think they are art, even if they have some sort of "art" involved. To me, they are as "art" as Hollywood movies.

  22. It depends on the case. Yes, you can resemble CoD MW:2 to a Hollywood action movie. On the other hand games like Shadow of the Colossus or Ocarina Of Time, for me, can be considered as a higher for of art, not just entertainment.

There are good movies and bad movies, shallow and deeper, the exist for games in my opinion.

  23. Finally! So many people have told me that games aren't art, even they contain music, stories, and graphics.

  24. I wish everyday that there would be a second Shadow of the Colossus soon!

  27. @Spartan094: We are waiting patiently for Last Guardian. I consider bying a PS3 only to play this game! And yeah, scenes from this game make excellent wallpapers!

@CPH: Are there still greek in here? I thought I changed the language settings lol.

  28. Multilingual blog lol.

Anyway, finally videogames are considered as they deserve to be. Nothing more.

  29. Lol seriously, I've put everything on "english" on the setting, I have no idea why you still get the buttons on Greek, if you know what do i need to change tell me please :P
